Climate Dictionary: Speak climate fluently
In a historic step towards advancing climate awareness and education in Somalia, the Institute of Climate and Environment (ICE) at SIMAD University has unveiled the ICE Climate Dictionary 2025 — the nation’s first climate terminology guide in the Somali language.
This pioneering resource translates and explains 40 of the most frequently used climate-related terms into Somali, including complex concepts such as climate justice, carbon markets, net-zero, just transition, and nature-based solutions. Designed in collaboration with UNDP and translated by a team of young Somali scholars at ICE, the dictionary makes climate language accessible to everyone, from students and journalists to community leaders and policymakers.
The ICE Climate Dictionary supports ICE’s wider strategy of community empowerment, policy engagement, and capacity building. It directly contributes to their mission of fostering inclusive climate action and driving local solutions through education and innovation.
