Announcing Mogadishu’s Largest Climate Gathering: The Climate Change Symposium 2024
In response to the urgent climate crisis facing Somalia, we are excited to announce the Climate Change Symposium 2024, set to take place on September 22, 2024. Hosted by the Institute of Climate and Environment (ICE) and the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOM), this landmark event will unite hundreds of diverse stakeholders for what promises to be the largest and most inclusive climate gathering ever held in Mogadishu.
As Somalia grapples with being the second most climate-vulnerable nation globally—despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions—this symposium marks a pivotal moment for national and international climate adaptation and resilience discourse. With rising temperatures, increased frequency of extreme weather events, and profound impacts on agriculture and human security, the need for concerted action has never been more pressing.
Why the Climate Change Symposium Matters
Somalia’s climate vulnerability is undeniable. From 1901 to 2022, the country has experienced a steady rise in temperatures, with projections suggesting a further increase of 1.5–2.3°C by 2050. Agriculture, the backbone of Somalia’s economy, has suffered from recurring droughts and floods, leading to severe food insecurity and displacement. With over 30 million people affected by climate-related disasters since 1990 and millions displaced in recent years, the urgency for effective solutions is clear.
The Climate Change Symposium 2024 aims to address these challenges head-on by creating a dynamic platform for dialogue and action. Our goals are to:
1. Facilitate Constructive Dialogue: Connect national and local stakeholders to share experiences, challenges, and best practices in climate adaptation and resilience.
2. Enhance Climate Understanding: Deepen stakeholder understanding of the climate crisis in Somalia and strengthen institutional capacities for resilience and sustainable development.
3. Influence Policy: Shape national policies and action plans related to climate change adaptation and mitigation, aligning with global discussions as Somalia prepares for COP29.
4. Promote Collaboration: Foster cooperation among government, civil society, international organizations, and the private sector to build a unified approach to climate resilience.
5. Engage All Sectors: Ensure that voices from across society, particularly those most affected by climate change such as women, children, and marginalized communities, are heard and included in the discourse.
The symposium will feature a range of activities including keynote speeches from renowned experts, panel discussions, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities. Attendees will hear from thought leaders and practitioners who will share evidence-based policies and practices for tackling climate challenges.
We invite policymakers, community leaders, experts, activists, and concerned citizens to join us in this crucial gathering. Together, we will explore practical, Somali-led solutions and strategies to enhance resilience against climate shocks. This symposium is not just an event—it’s a call to action for every individual and organization to contribute to a sustainable future for Somalia.
