We are delighted to announce that Mohamed Okash, the founding director of the Institute of Climate and Environment (ICE) at SIMAD University, has been invited to join the prestigious Global Future Council on Climate and Nature Governance by the World Economic Forum. This reflects his leadership and ongoing commitment to tackling climate and environmental challenges in Somalia and beyond.

The Global Future Councils (GFC) network, composed of 700 leading experts worldwide, is the World Economic Forum’s flagship initiative for innovative, cross-disciplinary collaboration on global issues. The 2025-2026 term will include 34 thematic councils, each focused on important areas, from advanced manufacturing to climate and nature governance. By connecting experts from government, academia, civil society, and business, the GFC generates forward-thinking solutions that inform and support the Forum’s mission to foster a resilient and sustainable future.

As a council member, Mohamed Okash will contribute his expertise in environmental policy, climate resilience, and sustainable development to address critical questions and solutions surrounding climate governance. His engagement on this global platform aligns with his work at ICE, where he has championed climate adaptation, environmental awareness, and community-driven initiatives that empower youth and local communities to combat climate change.

“I am honoured to join this global council and look forward to working alongside world-class experts to advance climate and nature governance solutions,” said Mohamed Okash. “The challenges we face demand collaboration across sectors and borders, and I am committed to sharing insights from Somalia’s journey towards climate resilience while learning from others’ approaches.”

This appointment places Mohamed Okash at the forefront of global efforts to address climate change, reinforcing his commitment to building a sustainable and resilient future. His work on the council will include participating in high-level dialogues, contributing to annual GFC meetings, and collaborating with interdisciplinary experts. Through this role, he will also be able to bring local perspectives from Somalia into global discussions, bridging knowledge across diverse regions and ensuring inclusive environmental progress.

We congratulate our director, Mohamed Okash, on this recognition and look forward to seeing the impact of his work on the Global Future Council on Climate and Nature Governance. His appointment is not only an achievement for him but also a proud moment for ICE and SIMAD University, demonstrating Somalia’s vital role in the global conversation on climate and environmental governance.
