Certification Ceremony for Climate Justice Incubator II
On 28 August 2025, the Institute of Climate and Environment (ICE) at SIMAD University hosted a colorful certification ceremony to honor more than 80 young participants who successfully completed a two-month training on Climate Justice, Leadership, Advocacy, and Storytelling. The event brought together students, policymakers, civil society representatives, and partners to celebrate the empowerment of a new generation of climate advocates in Somalia.
The training, which ran from June to August, was part of ICE’s youth empowerment and climate justice initiatives. Over the course of two months, participants engaged in an intensive curriculum covering climate justice essentials, leadership and advocacy skills, and storytelling for change. Through workshops, mentorship, and project development activities, the young leaders gained tools to influence policy, mobilize communities, and use creative communication to amplify their voices. Many participants developed innovative community projects and advocacy campaigns that they plan to implement in their respective areas.

The ceremony opened with welcoming remarks from Mr. Mohamed Okash, Director of ICE Institute, who highlighted the urgency of equipping young people with the tools to lead Somalia’s climate justice movement. He emphasized that investing in youth capacity is not only vital for climate action but also central to building Somalia’s sustainable future. Following his remarks, the program featured recognition of ICE’s partners and presentations from selected participants who showcased their climate justice projects and storytelling performances.
The awarding of certificates was a key highlight of the event. Certificates were presented by Mr. Abdinasor Mohamed representing Oxfam Somalia, Mr. Abdullahi Ahmed Abdirahman, Deputy Rector of SIMAD University, as well as Mr. Liban and Ms. Samira from ICE Institute. Their participation underscored the collaborative spirit behind the program and the shared commitment of academia, civil society, and international partners in supporting youth-led climate action.
Closing remarks were delivered by three distinguished speakers. Mr. Abdullahi Ahmed Abdirahman, Deputy Rector of SIMAD University, reaffirmed the university’s dedication to advancing climate education and research. Mr. Ahmed Farole from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change praised ICE for creating a platform that connects youth, government, and partners in shaping Somalia’s climate resilience. Finally, Mr. Abdinasir provided an inspiring conclusion, encouraging participants to put their newly acquired skills into action and to serve as role models in their communities.

The outcomes of this program and ceremony are far-reaching. More than 80 young people are now certified as climate justice advocates, equipped with knowledge and skills to champion solutions in their communities. The program generated a wide range of innovative project ideas, strengthened partnerships between academia, government, and civil society, and attracted media attention that increased the visibility of ICE’s mission. Beyond individual achievements, the event underscored the importance of youth leadership in building a climate-resilient and sustainable Somalia.
The certification ceremony was not only a celebration of achievement but also a call to action. It marked an important milestone in Somalia’s climate justice journey and reaffirmed ICE’s commitment to nurturing young leaders who can influence national and global climate dialogues. By investing in their skills and amplifying their voices, ICE and its partners are paving the way for inclusive, community-driven climate action that responds to Somalia’s unique challenges and aspirations.
