
ICE Institute 2024 Annual Report: Driving Climate Action and Resilience in Somalia
The Institute of Climate and Environment (ICE) at SIMAD University has been at the forefront of climate action, research, and policy advocacy, making 2024 a transformative year in building a greener and more resilient Somalia. This year’s achievements demonstrate our unwavering commitment to empowering communities, advancing climate research, and shaping policies that drive sustainable development.
Key Achievements of 2024:
Empowering Youth for Climate Action: Over 150 young leaders trained through the Climate Justice Incubator and UNLEASH Hack Somalia, equipping them with the skills to lead local climate initiatives.
Pioneering Thought Leadership & Dialogue: Convening impactful events such as the Climate Change Symposium, Mogadishu Environmental Summit, and the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Somalia 2024, fostering critical discussions on climate governance, finance, and resilience.
Expanding Research & Knowledge: Publication of peer-reviewed studies on climate resilience, food security, and environmental governance, along with the launch of the Knowledge Portal for Climate Action, providing data-driven insights for evidence-based policymaking.
Strengthening Strategic Partnerships: Collaborations with UNSOM, Oxfam Somalia, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and other key stakeholders have amplified our collective impact in addressing climate challenges.
Global Representation: ICE proudly represented Somalia at COP29 in Azerbaijan, strengthening Somalia’s position in global climate negotiations and advocating for climate finance access.
Impactful Milestones:
LCOY Somalia 2024 – The first-ever National Youth Statement on Climate Action was adopted, setting the foundation for integrating youth perspectives into Somalia’s climate policies.
Climate Change Symposium – Engaged 200+ policymakers, experts, and activists, culminating in a policy position paper on climate resilience.
UNLEASH Hack Somalia – 37+ young innovators participated in Somalia’s first climate-focused hackathon, developing community-driven solutions for climate adaptation.
Mogadishu Environmental Summit – Engaged multiple stakeholders to advance climate justice and local adaptation strategies.
