Climate Change Symposium on Youth and Children 2023
From 23rd – 24th October 2023, the Institute of Environment and Climate Change (ICE) at SIMAD University partnered with Save the Children Somalia to host a crucial two-day Climate Change Symposium for Youth and Children in Mogadishu. The event aimed to address climate change while protecting the rights of Somalia’s youth and children. This symposium brought together over 50 diverse stakeholders, including government representatives, civil society members, young environmental advocates, children, and university students. Hosted at the Jazeera Palace Hotel over two days, it featured engaging discussions, workshops, and presentations to empower the next generation to combat climate change’s adverse impacts.
The symposium kicked off with a powerful video presentation that starkly depicted the devastating consequences of climate change in Somalia. From recurring droughts to severe floods and cyclones, it was a visual reminder of the challenges that the country faces. It was a moment that set the tone for the discussions that would follow.
The symposium was graced by Prof Abdulkadir Shirwac, the Managing Director of the Galmudug Arboretum Initiative. Prof Shirwac emphasized the vital role of trees in mitigating climate change impacts. He introduced the Arboretum Initiative and its mission to conserve and plant trees, particularly endangered species, in Somalia. It was an enlightening session that showcased the potential of reforestation in combating climate change. Also, Ustaad Abdikaafi, our head of research, presented research findings that shed light on the intricate connections between climate change, government stability, and internal conflicts in sub-Saharan African countries. His presentation highlighted how climate change can exacerbate conflicts, particularly in regions with weak institutions.
During the event, the participants enjoyed three carefully selected workshops which aimed to enhance their understanding of the issue and offer tools to be part of the solution. the theme of the workshop was “understanding the science of climate change, building resilience and adaptation and climate activism and social media.
The panel discussion on youth-led climate activism in Somalia was a pivotal moment in the symposium. Moderated by Abdi Fatah Ali, a Human Rights Officer at UNSOM, it emphasized the urgent need for action. Panelists Suweydo Mohamed Abdi, Nuzaiba Abdullahi, and Abdilatif Hussien Omar shared their insights and perspectives on this critical issue. They underscored the pressing nature of the climate crisis, pointing out that this generation is the first to experience its effects and potentially the last with the opportunity to address it. They emphasized the urgency for immediate action to combat climate change.
The Declaration was adopted at the end of the event on Climate Change Symposium on Youth and Children underscores the commitment of all stakeholders to climate action. It calls for collective action, resource mobilization, and advocacy for equitable, youth-inclusive green policies that protect the most vulnerable. Together, we can work towards a sustainable future for current and future generations.
The Climate Change Symposium on Youth and Children was not just an event; it was a movement. It brought together experts, activists, and the youth of Somalia to address the pressing issue of climate change. Participants left with a deeper understanding of the climate challenges that Somalia faces and a passion for making a change.
The Director of the institute, Mr Mohamed Okash, delivered closing remarks at the event and stressed the need to ensure right-based, and impact-oriented climate action with concerted efforts from all the stakeholders in Somalia. He said ” We play a vital role in advocating sound policies towards a greener future for Somalia so that nature thrives and people prosper.
The call to action was clear and resounding. Participants committed to addressing the climate crisis urgently, mobilizing resources, fostering innovation, advocating for green policies, and empowering youth and children as leaders and changemakers. The youth of Somalia are empowered and inspired, ready to lead the charge in combating climate change and protecting their environment for future generations. The Climate Change Symposium on Youth and Children was not just a symposium; it was a catalyst for change, and it’s a story of hope in a world facing the challenges of climate change.
