ICE Institute and Tamarso Energy Sign MoU to Advance Renewable Energy Skills in Somalia

The Institute of Climate and Environment (ICE) at SIMAD University has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Tamarso Energy, a fully renewable energy enterprise and one of Somalia’s leading innovators in solar and green mini-grid development. The agreement was formalized during Tamarso’s 10th anniversary celebration, marking a decade of leadership in advancing clean energy solutions across Somalia. The timing of the signing reflects not only institutional maturity on Tamarso’s side, but also a shared long-term vision for building Somalia’s sustainable energy future through structured collaboration.

This partnership represents a deliberate alignment between academia and industry at a critical moment for Somalia’s energy transition. As renewable energy infrastructure expands across the country, the demand for technically skilled professionals in grid development, solar systems, and energy systems management continues to grow. The MoU establishes a joint framework to develop a skilled labor force capable of supporting and sustaining renewable energy growth nationwide. ICE will lead structured capacity-building programs targeting youth and emerging professionals, ensuring that talent development keeps pace with technological expansion.

Beyond workforce development, the agreement covers areas of joint research, collaborative project development, and applied innovation in renewable energy systems. ICE researchers and program participants will gain access to Tamarso’s energy laboratories and technical ecosystem, creating a bridge between theoretical learning and real-world industry application. This access ensures that training is not abstract, but directly informed by operational experience in grid systems and solar infrastructure deployment.

The MoU was officially signed by Mr. Mohamed Okash Sugow, Director of the Institute of Climate and Environment at SIMAD University, and Mr. Willem Frederik Boerrigter, Director and Co-Founder of Tamarso Green Mini Grids, representing Tamarso Energy. Their signatures formalize a shared institutional commitment to building Somalia’s renewable energy future through coordinated action.

Strategically, the MoU positions ICE as a knowledge and capacity-building partner within Somalia’s renewable energy ecosystem, while reinforcing Tamarso’s commitment to investing in local human capital and sector sustainability. Together, the institutions are creating a model of industry-academia cooperation that strengthens youth employment pathways, supports grid development across Somalia, and contributes to the broader objective of climate resilience and green economic growth. This partnership signals a shift from isolated initiatives to coordinated action in building the foundations of Somalia’s renewable energy future.
