Advancing Climate Justice Narratives through Outreach & Awareness Seminar

on 22nd July 2025, the Town Campus of SIMAD University buzzed with energy and purpose as 97 high school students from across Mogadishu came together for a one-of-a-kind event—an outreach and awareness seminar on Climate Justice and Climate Action. Organized by the ICE Institute and proudly supported by Oxfam Somalia, this gathering marked a powerful step forward in amplifying climate education among Somali youth.

From the very start, the atmosphere was filled with excitement. The seminar kicked off with warm welcoming remarks from Mohamed Okash, Director of the ICE Institute, who inspired the students to see themselves as the future leaders of Somalia’s climate movement. A short video on youth and climate action set the stage, reminding everyone that young people around the world and in Somalia are rising to the challenge of climate change.

One of the highlights of the day was an interactive workshop led by Liban Hassan, who broke down the fundamentals of climate science, climate change, and the concept of climate justice. He emphasized how climate change doesn’t affect everyone equally, and that the most vulnerable communities, especially in countries like Somalia, are facing the harshest impacts. “Understanding this injustice,” he shared, “is the first step to changing it.”

In a proud moment for the ICE Institute, the team officially launched the Climate Action Toolkit, a beginner-friendly guide designed to help youth understand climate issues, take local action, and connect with global movements. Whether you’re just starting out or already active in climate work, this toolkit offers something for everyone: lessons, action tips, and inspiration.

The students quickly put their learning into practice with a lively quiz session facilitated by Jumana Haasan. Laughter and cheers filled the room as correct answers were rewarded with eco-friendly prizes, turning learning into fun and motivation. Students also raised thoughtful questions during the Q&A, showing just how deeply they had engaged with the topics.

The event wrapped up with closing remarks from Mohamed Okash and Abdikarim Hassan Ibrahim, who encouraged students to continue their climate journey beyond the walls of the university. A group photo and networking session followed—marking new friendships, fresh ideas, and the beginning of something bigger.

This wasn’t just a seminar. It was a spark. As we continue to build a greener, fairer future, one thing is clear: Somalia’s youth are ready to lead. And the ICE Institute is here to walk alongside them every step of the way.
