Investigating the Role of sustainable Youth Employment in Combating the Climate Crisis in Somalia
We have conducted a groundbreaking research report exploring how sustainable youth employment can be a powerful force in tackling Somalia’s pressing climate crisis. The study highlights the untapped potential of Somali youth in driving climate resilience through innovation, environmental entrepreneurship, and community-led action.
Drawing on qualitative interviews with young leaders across sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, climate activism, and education, the research reveals the critical role youth are already playing in environmental conservation. From solar-powered irrigation systems and plastic waste upcycling to afforestation and beach cleanups, these youth-led initiatives are creating not only green jobs but also lasting environmental and social impact.
The report proposes a strategic model to scale these efforts by emphasizing five pillars: youth empowerment, innovation and technology, community involvement, policy support, and environmental education. Key findings highlight that while Somali youth are deeply passionate and resilient, limited funding, policy neglect, and low community awareness often hinder their work.
To unlock the full potential of youth-led environmental innovation, the report outlines actionable recommendations: establish a national policy framework for youth engagement, expand funding through grants and microfinance, strengthen capacity-building programs, and launch community-wide awareness campaigns.
The narratives of Somali youth featured in this research affirm a powerful truth: when empowered, young people can become champions of change and stewards of sustainability. By investing in this generation, Somalia can build a greener, more resilient future, setting a precedent for other climate-vulnerable nations across Africa and beyond.
